Lake Garda can boast a long and great sailing tradition and in the past 50 years its sailing clubs have trained the best Olympic class skippers. On the lake the winds vary from place to place. Light winds blow in the lower part of the lake, while fresher air currents blow northwards from Gargnano towards Malcesine, Riva and Torbole. Each place has its own sailing club and association with sailing school for both children and adults approved by the Italian Sailing Federation. Very famous are the sailing competitions on lake Garda like "Centomiglia" and "Intervela", regattas which have been held for 50 years. Lake Garda is the place where the "Homerus Project" - self-governing sailing for blind people - is born, a new and involving project of world-wide relevance. If you meet boats with bicoloured sails, old brown at the top and white at the bottom, be aware they are steered by blind people. Please be very careful and so kind as to give them way.
